A Guide for Families: Choosing the Best Educational Path for Your Child
At Creston Community Schools, we’re proud of the quality education we provide and hope to be your first choice. However, we recognize that every family has unique needs and preferences, and the decision about where your child receives their education is an important one. This page is designed to help families understand their options and the process for homeschooling or open enrollment in Iowa. If you need assistance at any point, we’re here to help.
Homeschooling in Iowa: Your Options and Requirements
Iowa offers families multiple homeschooling options to tailor their child’s education:
- Competent Private Instruction (CPI)
- With a Supervising Teacher: File Form A with the local district by September 1 or within 14 days of beginning instruction. A certified teacher will conduct four face-to-face visits per year.
- Without a Supervising Teacher: File Form A as above, and complete annual standardized testing or submit a portfolio for review by a licensed teacher.
- Independent Private Instruction (IPI)
- No Initial Paperwork is required unless requested by the district or Department of Education. Basic information, such as the number of students and instructional location, must be provided if asked.
Instructional Requirements:
- Homeschooling must cover at least 148 days per year, including subjects such as reading, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
Testing & Assessment:
- For CPI without a supervising teacher, students must take an annual standardized test or submit a portfolio. A score below the 30th percentile may require additional support.
Dual Enrollment & Extracurriculars:
- Homeschooled students can participate in classes and extracurricular activities through dual enrollment in their local district. Contact us to arrange dual enrollment.
Special Education Services:
- If your child has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), the district will continue to provide services to meet their needs.
Open Enrollment: Enrolling in Another Iowa District
Open enrollment allows families to enroll their children in a school district outside their resident district.
Eligibility and Deadlines:
- The application deadline is March 1 for grades 1-12 for the following school year, with kindergarten applications accepted through September 1. Exceptions apply in specific cases, such as bullying or a change in residence.
Application Process:
- Submit the open enrollment form to both the resident and receiving districts. Applications are available on the Iowa Department of Education website or at your local district office.
Approval and Appeals:
- Approval is based on factors like class size and racial balance. If denied, parents can appeal to the State Board of Education.
Transportation:
- Transportation is the family’s responsibility, though financial assistance may be available for qualifying families.
Extracurricular Eligibility:
- Open-enrolled students can join extracurricular activities and sports, though there may be a 90-day waiting period for high school athletics.
